Excerpts from Aikido Journal (Stanley Pranin):
Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu, the major technical influence on modern aikido, was a martial art taught in the first part of twentieth century Japan by the famous Sokaku Takeda of the Aizu clan, a certified martial arts' genius. Aikido Founder Morihei Ueshiba met Sokaku in 1915, and immediately became engrossed in training. Daito-ryu, in Morihei's words, "opened his eyes to budo."
Daito-ryu's imprint on modern aikido is undeniable. As it is a combative system of an earlier era, it emphasizes martial effectiveness much more compared to contemporary martial arts. The Daito-ryu curriculum is very well thought out, and the art incorporates sound martial principles and combative psychology that have long since been forgotten. In this sense, there is much to learn from a study of Daito-ryu that can be applied to our aikido practice in this age.
